THIS URBAN SQUARE IS PRODUCED AS PART OF A PROPOSED COMPLEX OF LOW RISE BUILDINGS, TYPICAL OF GREATER LOS ANGELES. IT CREATES A PLACE OF GATHERING, NOT ONLY FOR THE BUILDING INHABITANTS - BUT ALSO FOR THE CITY BLOCKS THAT SURROUND IT. UNIQUE TO THE TRADITIONAL CITY STREETSCAPE, WHICH IS CONSTRAINED BY THE BOUNDARIES OF THE ROADS AND THE BUILDING FACADES, WE CREATE AN AREA OF SOCIAL INTERACTION AND ECONOMIC ACTIVITY.
THE MASSING AND PLACEMENT OF THE THREE RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS, GENERATES AN EMBRACING SPACE THAT DEFINES THE EDGES OF THE PLAZA AND FORMS A GATEWAY, AT THE WEST OF THE SITE, TO THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES. BALANCING BUILDING MASS WITH OPEN SPACE

PRIVATE RESIDENCE
A RESIDENCE SITUATED ON A SMALL LOT, AND A MODERATELY BUSY ROAD. THE CHALLENGE WAS PROVIDING EXTERIOR SPACE WHILE PRESERVING PRIVACY.
BY PLACING THE COURTYARD AT THE FRONT OF THE LOT AND ENCLOSING IT, THIS ALLOWED FOR LOTS OF GLAZING - PROVIDING NATURAL LIGHT AND VENTILATION, WHILE GIVING THE RESIDENTS PRIVACY AND VIEWS OF THEIR LANDSCAPED COURTYARD.
